Exceeded the Maximum number of Datasets in Quicken

When you upgrade Quicken from the old version to Quicken 2017, you may encounter an error “You Have Exceeded the Maximum number of Datasets in Quicken.” It’s just an ongoing issue now but can be resolved automatically with the future update.

You have exceeded the maximum number of datasets. You cannot create a new dataset or continue to perform your current task at this time.

Quicken Datasets is the combination of mulitple Quicken Files (QDF) that can be syn with Mobile or Web.

Things to do before troubleshooting

1. Update Quicken to the Latest Release

  • Open Quicken Software
  • Go to Help > Check for Updates
  • If an update is available, click Yes to launch it or otherwise click OK

2. Create Quicken File Backup

  • Go to File > Backup and Restore
  • Select Back up Quicken File…
  • Click Back up Now

3 Methods to Fix Exceeded the Maximum number of Datasets in Quicken

Method 1: Reset Quicken Data

If your data is syncing with mobile or web then you’ll have this option. If you don’t see the reset option please proceed further with Method 2

  • Open Quicken
  • Go to Edit > Preferences
  • Then select Quicken ID, Mobile & Alerts from the left pane
  • Click on Reset your cloud data
  • Then type Yes and click Reset

Method 2: Sign In and Sign Out from Quicken Data File

  • Go to Edit > Preferences
  • Then select Quicken ID, Mobile & Alerts from the left pane
  • Click Sign in as a different user
  • Then type Yes
  • Click Sign Out

A new window prompts where it asks for Quicken ID & Password. Now you need to Sign In back to the same data file.

  • Click on SIGN IN
  • Enter your Quicken ID and Password
  • Then click SIGN IN
  • Now follow onscreen instructions to login into the same data file

Now try to access your data file or update bank accounts. If the same problem still exists then proceed further with Method 3.
